片尾有两处老仆人Jose念了经文。Catalina下葬后的一个夜晚，Jose念了The Book of Wistom第二章的内容

For they have said, reasoning with themselves, but not right: The time of our life is short and tedious, and in the end of a man there is no remedy, and no man hath been known to have returned from hell: For we are born of nothing, and after this we shall be as if we had not been: for the breath in our nostrils is smoke: and speech a spark to move our heart, Which being put out, our body shall be ashes, and our spirit shall be poured abroad as soft air, and our life shall pass away as the trace of a cloud, and shall be dispersed as a mist, which is driven away by the beams of the sun, and overpowered with the heat thereof: And our name in time shall be forgotten, and no man shall have any remembrance of our works.

随后Catalina哥哥将他赶走，Jose抱怨了一句Catalina哥哥不读圣人之书。当夜哥哥和Alejandro之间爆发冲突。

第二天早晨的餐桌上，Jose念了同一章后面的内容

These things they thought, and were deceived: for their own malice blinded them.

当天哥哥用猎枪将Alejandro打死于Catalina的墓地。

前面那一大段极力铺陈讲述“人总是要死的”这一观点，同葬礼后的阴郁氛围契合。后面那一句是驳斥原文中the wicked就“人总是要死的”而提出的何不寻欢作乐游戏人间的观点。“their own malice blinded them”也像是在指射故事中的人物，往往为心中的恨蒙蔽了双眼，无法得到解脱。

这部分节选似乎又出自“所罗门智训”，1684年梵蒂冈从圣经中除名的14本书中的一本。
