For today's audiences, the very low budget production will probably be too distracting. But this show, first released in 1978, was ahead of its time in so many ways. Its conventions are now the recognized standards in quality television dramas.
The subject matter was dark and serious. The characters are flawed and often morally ambiguous. It raises more questions than it answers.
Structurally, each episode can stand alone and yet each season has an arc and the overall series follows a story. Most importantly, the way stories play out is always consistent with the traits of the characters and how we'd imagine they'd behave. It has strong internal logic to the story telling.
Fans of modern Sci-fi can only dream of what it would be like if Terry Nation was at his peak in the present with the budget and resources of a Battlestar Galactica level production.
