美丽坏东西影评:the Colours in the Film Dirty Pretty Things
There are many topics in Dirty Pretty Things that can be discussed, like the plot, and the issue of immigration. However, I am not that into the plot, as a Chinese, I am not familiar with the issue of illegal immigrants. So the best topic for me would be its colours.
The whole colour setting of the film is cold, especially when it comes to London, the appearance of London in this film is cold and dark. This is mainly due to the cinematographer's choice---most exterior scenes were completed in the evening when the light turns blue. Another advantage of recording in the evening is that audiences can see the scene both outside and inside the buildings. Audiences can hardly see London in the day, the sky they can see is only pale white.
The colours inside the hotel are all warm colours. the warmth here doesn’t let the viewer feel warm, on the other hand, it is depressing.
In terms of colours in the underground world ,the lighting is more or less greenish, which creates a clammy atmosphere and suggests an abnormal world.
Whenever Okwe sits behind the reception desk, on one side of his face there is usually a blue light, the blue breaks the depressing feeling, forming a sharp contrast with the warm colour. The contrast attracts more attention as well.
The colours surrounding Senay are gentle, in most scenes, it coincides with her pale face.
As the film goes on, the director’s effort to create a certain atmosphere while maintaining the feeling of the nature light becomes apparent. Obviously, the light and the colours that appears in the film are carefully selected.
