This film tell us a tragedy about a ballet dancer Victoria Page. The story itself is about a classic conflict between love and dream.The story is happening very fluently and I feel very comfortable to watch. I don't think the comfort comes form the fluency only, but also from the characters. After I watch this film, i realize i love every single character. Then I find out that all the characters have good nature. None of them are evil. They are distinctly recognizable. Also, the atmosphere of most of scene are intimate, since characters are kind and full of life. In addition, body gestures are very exaggerated, which I think helps to reveal the dramatic characters. Like the head of dancers, Ljubov, even though he is not the main character, but we can easily tell the jocose nature of him through the way he talks and how he behaves.
On the other hand, the plot itself is not one of the best, but still enchanting. I totally understand everything that Lermontov did and respect him. There should be only one ultimate dream for every individual. It’s ok to have both dancing and love in your life, but once we are talking about the supremacy, perfection or greatest, like what Lermontov is chasing for, there is no room for other thoughts. Three protagonists, Craster, Lermontov and Page represent people that have three different conviction. Love, Art and wandering between both. This film clearly delivered the message that the director wants to tell us: To have one clear and only conviction. It’s ok to change just like Craster, but it’s never ok to hold both or more dreams. Page is a pretty good example of whats gonna happen to people who have more than one belief. It’s ok to approach many goal but once you have to make a choice between them, you will suffer. Page seems give up ballet and married Craster, she was thinking ballet still, and I don't think it feels good. However, since she can still have both of her favorite at that point, she doesn't feel the pain as much. In the end of this film, when Page have to give up one, either ballet or love, she can not make the decision because she doesn't have the ultimate goal. Ballet and love are equal in her mind. She eventually choose to not to choose, which is finish herself to escape this.
In this story, everything goes very well, effort get paid and there’s no such disgusting accident for pushing the story forward. The only conflict is the Page’s struggling between ballet and love, of which is also what the red shoes referring to. Both of ballet and love go well in Page’s live so that she cherishes both just like the red shoe that the girl get in the fairy tale. She is immersed in this giant happiness and became blind. It’s not her fault, most of the people will end up like her in this kind of situation.
So far, as I'm writing the stuff above, I started to realize that the plot is not as bad as I thought. It’s too tame and easy so I almost ignore it. It is the tameness that construct Page’s tragedy, step by step, silently and quietly. It is the happiness that kills Page. Now, I think this is a better film, better than thirty minutes ago, when I just finish watching. It is good to know that writing about a film helps to understand. I always know this fact but this time, I actually got the feeling by myself, instead of read from someone else, just like what I wrote from last essay.
