One of Hollywood’s most tragic stories was the death, at 32 years old, of actor Robert Walker. Walker was one of Hollywood’s brightest young stars when David O. Selznick took control of his wife, actress Jennifer Jones and set him on a path to his demise. His life, divorce and mental breakdown was one of Hollywood’s quieter scandals of the late 1940s that was subdued by the MGM publicity octopus.

Walker, who starred in films such as Hitchcock’s Strangers on a Train and See Here, Private Hargrove was a talented young talent who could have been mistaken for Jack Lemmon. He was married to Academy Award winning actress Jennifer Jones. They had two children when Selznick entered their lives.

Walker and Jones had two sons, who both later became actors-Robert Walker, Jr who starred in the film Ensign Pulver in 1964 (ironically the role played by Jack Lemmon in Mister Roberts) , Star Trek etc. and Michael Walker.

While she was married to Walker, Jones went to work for the Uber producer, David O. Selznick ( Gone With the Wind). Selznick became a sort of Svengali to Jones, who soon began a torrid affair with him. Jones left Walker for Selznick (and married him in 1949).

Walker subsequently suffered an emotional breakdown due to the emotional divorce from Jones.

Selznick was also married- to Irene Mayer, who happened to be MGM’s Louis B. Mayer’s daughter. Selznick left his wife and kids and eventually married Jones.

Much of this sordid affair was partially subdued by Howard Stricking’s nefarious publicity machine at MGM to protect Mayer’s daughter Irene and his grandchildren. Jones remained married to Selznick-and under his control until his death in 1965. After Selznick’s death she attempted suicide. Later ( in 1969) she married billionaire industrialist Norton Simon. She died in 2009 at the age of 90.

While researching Robert Walker and his death, I came upon this fascinating article that appeared in Redbook Magazine in 1951 by writer Jim Henaghan, who was also Robert Walker’s best friend. In this story, Henaghan details Walkers tragic death. I include this account, in its entirety.
