This is one of Agnès's experiments in all different kinds of genera. Varda relocated herself to Los Angeles in 1967 with her husband. She used this film to record the history at that moment with its political and poetical context. She was also playing with both fact and fiction. She recorded the culture of this new generation of progressively minded youths. She painted life with a playfully painful attitude of privileged life lost in the haze of ignorance and inebriates. This film is also being described as an 'amorphous meditation' on the late-sixties American hipster culture. This film is constantly questioning reality. We saw in the film that she showed herself in the mirror behind the camera. Also, there are many lines that indicated the presence of her as a filmmaker making this film in progress. Clarke wondered in the movie "Which comes first, the movie or reality " This film serves as a commentary on the American (Hollywood) studio as well. The businessman is having a conversation about Varda herself, discussing whether they should give the power to this 'girl' to make the movie. This conversation is slyly subverted by what we see on screen: complete cinematic liberation.
