故事改编自卡赞自己的小说，不知道是不是有些自传意味（主人公同样是希腊裔，父辈以地毯生意为生，就连姓氏也沿用了《美国，美国》里的Arness）。电影始于广告人安德森一场无由的自杀，随后剧情缓缓展开，观众才了解他面临的巨大精神压力：枯燥的婚姻生活和强大的父权压迫让他无处藏身，只有如小孩般与女研究员格温厮混才能暂时逃脱找回自我。随着格温的离去，他的精神世界分崩离析，开始陷入漫长的痛苦与迷茫当中，最终一口气打破了父权（烧毁父亲房子）与道德规条。剧情中后段基本没什么进展，而是集中于对他破碎的精神世界刻画：不断闪回穿梭的叙事象征零乱的思绪，和另一个自我对话和呓语象征内心的交战（卡赞惯用的戏剧式表达），颇为意识流的表现手法。费·唐纳薇苍白得如同梦魇，和秉承老式表演风格又浓眉大眼的道格拉斯配对看起来相当怪异而不搭

大量的闪回，透过其中发现男主人公的角色变化. 对父权的批判，爱情的割舍，工作的重担..最后，终于不用假装活着了，香烟一点都不纯粹，他就是致癌物、我就是我，我想成为我自己.（开头游泳池的镜头很美，我很喜欢）
卡赞在《美国，美国》后的这六年经历了什么，拍出了这么大胆、跳跃、非主流的电影，有点无法接受。。。
片子好老，虽然不如现在这么清晰炫目，但是演员表现得很好，剧情也给力。
故事还是挻有意思的，觉得费·唐纳薇不像黛博拉·蔻儿美丽得这么直接，但充满了性感的气息。
