Paulina自己是独裁统治的受害者，她被极其残忍地迫害只因为统治者想从她嘴里获得信息。而在这个晚上，Paulina，自己也变成了一个独裁者，追随着她所想要的真相，将Miranda绑在椅子上，逼迫他承认供词。结局是否Miranda真的强奸过Paulina已经不再重要，因为Paulina最终获得了她想要的承认供词。
Gerardo在这部电影里扮演的是理性的存在，他在最后即使愤怒却没有把Miranda推下去，说明民主法律的重要性是它是法治而非原始社会的放肆野蛮，Gerardo作为在二人之间盘旋的一个人，从未偏袒任何一方，也不停止追逐真相的存在。当这场不道德审判在这个黎明结束，它的不道德却没有结束过。Paulina因为不道德的残害一辈子生活都有阴影，而doctor Miranda也因为这场不道德审判人生从此蒙上了一层灰。
电影以Paulina这个受害者摇身一变变成独裁者，而施暴者却变成板上待宰的羔羊这种转换更清晰地传达了人性的复杂性与残任，当你拥有权力拥有至高无上的权力，每个人都可以施暴。也正是因为独裁的可怕，民主的存在才显得更加至关重要。也正如他自己所说的“Killing doesn’t end it for the either side. ”杀戮残暴无用，建立一个合理的法律制度才是理性公正，但是建立一个公正的系统是很难的，是Gerardo的困难，是社会的困难。
电影里Gerardo说"In a democracy a midnight knock can be friendly."。我相信那一天会到来，而那一天，不道德审判不会再存在。
Paulina herself is a victim of the dictatorship; she’s been tortured simply because the authority wants information from her. Courageous as she’s been, she did not surrender to the torture. And this special night in the film, Paulina herself turned into the role of dictator while doctor. Miranda being the one tied tightly, insulted, and tortured. Paulina craved for the truth so desperately, and finally, she got them.
There is no use in figuring out whether Miranda did rap Paulina or not, the dictator Paulina tonight just want to make sure she’s got the thing she always longs for. What really worth thinking about is the meaning of this unfair trial.
I think Gerardo plays the consciousness in the film, you can detect it from the scene where all of the three are standing over a cliff. Gerardo is angry in deed but he doesn’t lose his mind to push the doctor in order to ease his anger. The truth is, during the entire movie, Gerardo never stop finding the truth but he just never does so in a violent way. What Gerardo’s consciousness reflects is that the core of democracy lies in just and law. Unlike the primitive societies, democracy and law enable us the power to justify ourselves and also punish the evil. Being the middle man between Miranda and Paulina, Gerardo never biases either one of them.
When this trial ends in the morning, its unfairness doesn’t end with it as well. Supposed that Miranda didn’t rape Paulina at all, he will be haunted by this painful night ever since just as Paulina did. Death and the maiden expresses the complexity of human nature and cruelty by turning Paulina into a dictator and Doc. Miranda the victim. When one possesses the power, he can do whatever he want to do to others, and so in order to prevent the happening of dictatorship, the existence of law become much more important. As what Gerardo himself said in the movie “killing doesn’t end it for the either side”, violence and cruelty is useless, democracy is what really be needed. However, to build up a completely fair and just system is difficult, like Gerardo’s effort trying to get Paulina listen to him.
In a democracy, a midnight knock can be friendly. That day may come, and in that day, unfair trail like the one in this movie will exist no more.
