"He who makes a beast of himself gets rid of the pain of being a man" Dr. Johnson(片头)
There he goes, one of God's own prototypes, a high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production, too weird to live, and too rare to die. -Ugh!
We're all wired into a survival trip now, no more of the speed that fueled the 60's, that was the fatal flaw in Tim Leary's trip, he crashed around America, selling "consciousness expansion" without ever giving a thought to the grim meat-hook realities that were lying in wait for all those people who took him seriously, all those pathetically eager acid freaks who thought they could buy peace and understanding for three bucks a hit. But their loss and failure is ours too. What leary took down with him was the central illusion of a whole lifestyle that he helped create. A generation of permanent cripples, failed seekers, who never understood the essential old-mystic fallacy of the acid culture: The desperate assumption that somebody or at least some force is tending the light at the end of the tunnel.

I talk about Thompson is because last night the we-chat official account of a literature I've booked sent a letter Thompson wrote to Hume Logan on Apr. 22nd, 1958. And the letter is the 21st letter collected in a book called Letters of Note which has collected 124 letters from all over the world, from BC to now, like Mick Jagger to Andy Warhol, Queen Elizabeth II to US president Eisenhower with the Queen's hot cake recipe at the same time, Virginia Woolf's last words to her husband written on the eve of her suicide, punk godfather Iggy Pop's letter to a young music fan's advice etc., English actor Benedict Cumberbatch recommended it.

(Hume Logan)
≈≈≈≈≈≈≈

你或许还可以试试读让-保罗·萨特(Jean-Paul Sartre) 的《存在与虚无》(Being and Nothingness),和另一本小书《存在主义—从陀思妥耶夫斯基到萨特》(From Dostoyevsky to Sartre)。
